The history of the Gujarati literature can be traced back to 1000 AD, [1] and these texts have evolved ever since. It is unique in that it has no support from the ruling monarchy, other than its founders.Gujarat Vidhya Sabha, Gujarat Sahitya Sabha, Gujarat Sahitya Akademi and Gujarati Sahitya Parishad are Gujarat-based literary institutions that promote Gujarati literature.

History
Factors such as the policies of the emperors, the way of life of the people, and the global impact on society are essential for any book to prosper. In Gujarat, due to the development of trade and commerce, the religious influence of Jainism and Hinduism, and also because of the safety and promotion of rulers like Chaulukya (Solanki) and Vaghela Rajputs, writing works were fully operational from the 11th century.

Gujarati literature is also sometimes divided into two broad categories, namely poetry and prose, which was the earliest and most complete of its long history, dating from the 6th century. Poetry as a concept was a way of expressing religious beliefs and decisions, a fortress of ancient Indian times. In this gradual emergence, the history of Gujarati literature is generally divided into three broad periods, including the early period (up to c. 1450 AD), the middle period (1450 to 1850 AD) and the modern period (1850 AD onwards). However, the Gujarati literature and its great maturity and cultural contribution are traced back to the days of the Gujarat Sultanate (referring to the Muzaffarid dynasty, which gave the sultans of Gujarat in western India from 1391 to 1583).

Gujarati literature is mainly divided into three periods or Yugas; the original, modern and contemporary, in these times are still further distinguished.

The early period (up to 1450 AD) and the Middle Ages (1450 AD - 1850 AD) are divided into 'before Narsinh' and 'during Narsinh' times. Some scholars distinguish this period as 'Rāsa yug', 'Saguṇ Bhakti yug' and 'Nirguṇ Bhakti yug' as well.

The present period (1850 AD to the present) is divided into 'Sudhārak Yug' or 'Narmad Yug', 'Paṇḍit Yug' or 'Govardhan Yug', 'Gandhi Yug', 'Anu-Gandhi Yug', 'hundhunik Yug' and 'U -Anu-hundhunik Yug '.
