Wearing a local helmet in a two wheeler will result in a fine of one thousand rupees, new rules are coming.

The central government is going to implement a new law to ensure only two-wheeler riders wear branded helmets, production and sales.  A fine of Rs 1,000 will be levied for wearing a local helmet.  In addition, a fine of Rs 2 lakh and imprisonment will be imposed on a local helmet manufacturer.  Every day 28 bike riders die due to local i.e. local helmets or without helmets in road accidents.

Helmet reduced weight to a new standard

Experts say that if you are caught wearing a helmet or a poor quality helmet (local helmet), the police will impose a fine of Rs 1,000.  In the new standard, the weight of the helmet has been reduced from one and a half kg to one kg 200 g.  Rajiv Kapoor, president of the Two Wheeler Helmet Manufacturers Association, said that if helmets were included in the BIS list, lives could be saved in two-wheeler road accidents.  According to a 2016 study, 28 bike riders die in road accidents every day in the country due to or without a local helmet.

A fine of Rs 2 lakh has been imposed on a company manufacturing non-BIS helmets

Helmet production, stock and sale without complying with BIS standards will now be considered a crime.  The company will be fined Rs 2 lakh for doing so.  Local helmets may not even be shipped from one state to another.  Transport expert Anil Chikara says people do not know the difference between helmets (engineer-staff) and industrial helmets worn on construction sites.  Plain helmets cannot save the life of a bike rider in a road accident.  As per the rules of BSI, the customer will know the batch, brand, date of manufacture etc. of the helmet.
